STYLE GUIDE

Your design style is one thing that should be considered early on in the renovation or decorating process, this is true whether working with a designer or while doing it solo. Many of us know things that we like and things that we don’t, but trying to convey that to others can be a challenge. This is why we have listed a few of the most popular styles to help you begin thinking about characteristics of your signature style, and remember you don’t have to be all in on any particular style, but identifying key elements will help create a tailored and personal look that you are likely to love for years.

CONTEMPORARY

A common misconception of contemporary is that it refers to modern design, however contemporary design is more fluid and, more or less, refers to current design styles & trends. At the time of this article I would suggest that contemporary style is largely influenced by Transitional style – melding edgy elements with traditional and a deep appreciation for reclaimed and timeless pieces.

TRANSITIONAL

Just as the name implies Transitional means the movement between different things, in this case a room or home that moves between different styles in a single space. Transitional style does not adhere to strict rules, rather it combines elements from different styles, namely traditional and modern elements, to create an interesting and cohesive look through depth and contrast. Accessorizing is important, but it is kept to a curated collection rather than an over abundance.

KEY FEATURES

  • mix of textures/materials
  • often neutral palette
